Fall Into Nature at Teatown Lake Reservation — Leaf Peeping, Forest Bathing, and More Just Outside NYC

Teatown

Just 45 minutes from the bustle of New York City, there’s a peaceful escape where the only thing rushing is the wind through the trees. Nestled on a 1,000-acre nature preserve in Ossining, NY, Teatown Lake Reservation is an environmental education center and nonprofit whose mission is to inspire lifelong environmental stewardship — and it just might be your new favorite fall getaway.

A Leaf-Peeper’s Paradise
With 15 miles of scenic hiking trails open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk, Teatown is a dream for anyone craving crisp autumn air, golden leaves, and the calming beauty of nature. Their 14 trails range from easy strolls to moderately challenging hikes, winding through mixed hardwood forests, laurel groves, fields, streams, farmland, and along the edges of tranquil lakes.

One highlight is Teatown’s two-acre Wildflower Island, home to over 230 species of native wildflowers. Guided tours are available for those who want to learn about the delicate ecosystem up close.

New This Fall: The Phenology Trail
September marks the debut of Teatown’s new Phenology Trail — a 0.5-mile loop designed as part of their ecological monitoring program. Along the way, visitors will spot specimen trees and shrubs marked with signs that track the fascinating cycle of leaf emergence, flowering, fruiting, and senescence.

Wildlife Encounters for the Whole Family
Teatown isn’t just about trees and trails — it’s also home to a variety of Animal Ambassadors, including turtles, snakes, and even opossums. These non-releasable wildlife residents help educate children and adults about the animals that share our local ecosystems.

Big Changes Ahead
Looking to the future, Teatown is planning an ambitious $26 million transformation of its campus. The centerpiece will be a brand-new 5,400-square-foot Education Center designed by award-winning nARCHITECTS. With teaching spaces, a deck, and a green roof, the center will serve as a hub for hands-on learning. Construction is set to break ground in Fall 2025.
